ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE 1,4-diaza-2-cycloalkanones and substituted derivatives thereof are prepared by reaction of l,2-diamines with .alpha.-trihaloalkyl alcohols in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst. Phase transfer catalysts which are suitable for use in such synthesis include certain selected ammonium salts, phosphonium and sulfonium salts.
