RECURSIVE-LIKE ADAPTIVE ECHO CANCELLER Abstract of the Disclosure The present invention relates to an echo cancellation apparatus. The apparatus is comprised of an adjustable signal processing network connected to form a signal path shunting the leakage signal path of an echo return signal on one side of a junction connecting transmission circuits. The network synthesizes, from the transmission signal that produces the echo return signal, a replica to approximate the echo return signal. A signal combiner is connected to receive the replica and another signal for providing a residual echo signal for adjusting the network. A second adjustable signal processing network is provided which is responsive to the residual echo signal and is connected to receive the return echo signal to provide a selective signal modification or the other signal of the signal combiner. The networks are adjustable together to adapt to a model of the transfer function of the leakage path which is characterized by a rational mathematic expression possessing poles and zeros as respective roots of the denominator and numerator of the rational expression whereby the effect of transmission zeros inherent to the leakage path is substantially eliminated by the first mentioned network and the effect of transmission poles inherent to the leakage path is substantially eliminated by the second mentioned network when the residual echo is at a minimum magnitude.
