47,892 STATIC-CONTROLLED DIRECT CURRENT WELDING APPARATUS ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A direct current arc welder includes a thyristor- controlled semiconverter mounted across the secondary of the main transformer, with a swinging reactor provided in series with the welding arc. The reactor has been designed to provide initially a large inductance and to provide a finite unsaturated state at very high arc load currents. Control of the firing angle of the thyristors is under voltage and current feedback control with overriding gate pulse suppres- sion at will by the operator, or under an emergency. The gating angle is automatically reset after gate pulse suppres- sion has been applied, and normal welding operation under feedback control is gradually restored after gate pulse suppression has been removed.
