ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A magnetometer used as a magnetic heading reference for a small aircraft is mounted on a directional dial in the aircraft in the vicinity of the pilot and is free to turn with the dial about the yaw axis of the aircraft. A circuit for generating a signal proportional to the northerly turning error produced in the magnetometer due to the vertical component of the earth's magnetic field is included. This signal is then subtracted from the output of the magnetometer to compensate for the northerly turning error.
