The device contains opposed surfaces providing a controlled capillary flow zone, each surface including means for directing flow along predetermined paths and at least one surface including means to permit liquid introduction between the surfaces. At least a portion Or the paths of one surface form a positive angle with respect to the paths of the directly opposing portion of the other surface, whereby controlled multi- directional flow of liquid introduced between the surfaces occurs with a predetermined peripheral configuration.
