ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method and apparatus for recovering trash and for recovering metal containers of a preselected type from a collection of trash is dis- closed. The apparatus includes hoppers and conveyor means and pneumatic and magnetic separators for removing extraneous debris of predetermined specific weight. The separated containers are crushed and weighed. Com- pensation is issued in response to the weight of the separated containers. Control means are provided for regulating the flow into the weighing hop- per and for dumping the hopper after the weighing cycle has been complete. The separated containers are stored in an overhead compartment for collec- tion and transportation. The invention is convenient for the consumer, and provides the necessary incentives so that consumers are encouraged to collect and return empty containers.
