ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A waste water treatment plant for carrying out an activated sludge treatment process in accordance with the invention includes an aeration basin capable of receiving a flow of waste water (which flow may be subject to temporary rate surges) and retaining a selected volume of the waste water. The basin will in- clude suitable means for aerating a mixture of the waste water and activated sludge. The plant also includes a settling tank adapted to receive the aerated waste water and activated sludge and to permit the activated sludge to settle downwardly toward the bottom of the tank. Effluent outlet means are associated with the settling tank to allow the clarified effluent to escape therefrom. Sludge return means are associated with the settling tank for withdrawing sludge which is settled toward the tank bottom and to return at least a portion of same to the aeration basin. The plant includes means for pumping the aerated waste water and sludge mixture from the aeration basin to the settling tank at a selected rate such that the flow rate of the mixture into the settling tank is sub- stantially independent of the temporary surges in the rate of flow of waste water into the aeration basin. This serves to reduce any disturbance to the settling of the sludge with the aeration basin typically accommodating volume changes due to any temporary surges in the flow of waste water thereinto.
