ABSTRACT Apparatus for winding a web onto a cylindrical core to form a reel, comprising two support rollers for supporting and rotating the core and the growing reel, and a support member movable into an operative position in which it extends upwardly between the support rollers to support a fresh cylindrical core on a support surface of the support member and out of winding contact with at least one support roller in the space between the support roller and the growing reel. Guide groove means are disclosed for guiding the movement of the support member into and out of its operative position. The support surface may comprise two or more support points which are formed by horizontally disposed small rollers disposed transverse to the roller core axis.
