ABSTRACT When hiking in the woods or mountains it is known that making noise with a noisemaker as you walk reduces the risk that you will be attacked by a bear. This is because most attacks by bears occur when a bear is startled by an unexpected encounter with a person, and can be averted if bears are given some warning that a person is coming. This invention, entitled Bear Aware, is a noisemaker designed specifically for use by hikers in bear country. It consists of a loud alarm buzzer that is repeatedly turned on and off by a solid state timer. The timer permits the hiker to set both the length of the alarm soundings and the length of the silent intervals in between. The alarm and the timer are enclosed in a watertight case, and the unit is completely portable and can be worn on a belt. Unlike some other types of noise- makers used by hikers, e.g. personal distress alarms, Bear Aware provides hands-free operation by automatically re-sounding according to the alarm schedule preset by the hiker. Bear Aware is also unlike noisemakers such as bells (worn by some hikers on their backpacks) that make only unceasing or very frequently repeated noise which may become irritating to the user.
