ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method of catalyst manufacture. A powered refrac- tory inorganic oxide is blended with a binder-lubricant, and thereafter with a peptizing agent and a surfactant. The re- sulting dough is extruded, dried and calcined to yield a catalyst of improved macropore volume characteristics. Catalysts of this invention are particularly useful in the hydrorefining of petroleum crude oils and of residual oils recovered as a bot- toms fraction in the distillation of petroleum crude oils.
