ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In the gas shielded arc welding method for a long seam of formed pipe and the like, the improvement is provided wherein a welding voltage-current and shielding gas is established to produce incomplete short circuiting transfer, such that the welding arc is maintained and the voltage does not drop to OV as compared with the prior short circuit method in which the arc is interrupted and the voltage drops to V; in this way it is possible to employ high speed welding, with high speeds of more than at least 3m/min, especially, 5m/min; the method also has advantages over the prior spray transfer method where voltage and current are maintained essentially constant but high speed welding is not possible without formation of a strong plasma jet which blows off the molten metal to expose the seam. The incomplete short circuit transfer lies intermediate the spray transfer weld region and the short circuit transfer weld region of the prior art.
