A B S T R A C T Process for preparing 1-[1-benzimidazolyl]N-[2-(4- hydroxy 3-methoxy phenyl) 2-hydroxy ethyl] 3-amino butane, of formula: Image as well as its acid addition salts and hydrates, comprising the following steps: a) condensation of l-[l-benzimidazolyl] 3-amino butane with (3-methoxy 4-phenyl methoxy) phenylglyoxal to form an amine, b) reduction "in situ" of this imine with excess sodium borohydride to form 1-[l-benzimidazolyl] N-[2-hydroxy 2- (3-methoxy 4-phenyl methoxyphenyl) 2-hydroxy ethyl] 3-amino butane, followed by conversion of the latter into a non- toxic acid addition salt, c) hydrogenolysis of said salt to obtain the corresponding salt of compound (I), d) transformation of the salt obtained into thc desired corresponding base of formula I. Such products are especially useful in the treatment of asthma and premature labor.
