ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention provides 1,2,3-thiadiazole-5- carboxylic acid derivatives of the formula I Image (I) wherein R1 represents a hydrogen atom or an unsubstituted or chlorine or bromine substituted alkyl group containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and X represents a group of the formula -Y-R2, in which R2 represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms, a phenyl, chlorophenyl, nitrophenyl or methylphenyl group, an alkali metal atom or a monovalent equiva- lent of zinc, manganese, calcium, magnesium or barium, a phenyl group and Y represents an oxygen or sulphur atom, or X represents a group of the formula Image in which R3 and R4 each represents a hydrogen atom, an unsubstitut- ed or halogen-, phenoxy-, dialkylamino-, alkoxy- or alkoxycarbonyl- substituted C1-C8-alkyl group, a C2-C6-alkenyl or -alkynyl group, a C3-C8-cycloalkylmethyl group, a C6-C8-cycloalkyl group or a phenyl or phenyl substituted by at least one of chloro, nitro and methyl groups having both a herbicidal and a growth-regulating action, and accordingly may be made up with suitable carriers into herbicidal preparations and may be used for treating living plants and areas of land.
