Abstract Phosphonic acid derivatives of the formula (I) Image (I) wherein R1 and R2 are each, hydrogen, a catio or an ester group; R3 is hydrogen or alkyl; and R4 may be H, F, NH2, optionally substituted alkoxy, alkenyloxy or alkynyloxy, or a range of specified acyloxy radicals, or R3 and R4 with the adjacent carbon atom may form a keto group or a functional derivative thereof. The compounds are useful as herbicides.
