A means and method for treating malaria, schistosomiasis, and cancer using a spiro or dispiro 1,2,4-trioxolane is described. The preferred 1,2,4- trioxolanes include a spiroadamantane group on one side of the trioxolane group, and a spirocyclohexyl on the other side of the trioxolane group, whereby the spirocyclohexyl ring is preferably substituted at the 4-position. In comparison to artemisinin semisynthetic derivatives, the compounds of this invention are structurally simple, easy to synthesize, non-toxic, and potent against malarial parasites.

L'invention concerne un moyen et une méthode de traitement du paludisme, du schistosomiase et du cancer, au moyen d'un 1,2,4-trioxolane spiranique ou dispiranique. Les 1,2,4-trioxolanes préférés comprennent un groupe spiroadamantane sur un flanc du groupe trioxolane, et un spirocyclohéxyle sur l'autre flanc du groupe trioxolane, le noyau spirocyclohéxyle étant, de préférence, substitué à la position 4. Par comparaison avec des dérivés semi-synthétiques d'artemisinine, les composés de l'invention présentent une structure simple, sont faciles à synthétiser, non toxiques et puissants contre les parasites du paludisme.
