The invention provides a process for making 1,3-oxazolium-5-oxides and their .alpha.-amide substituted ketene tautomer from reaction of in situ generated imminium salts or their .alpha.-substituted amide isomer with carbone monoxide in the presence of a metal catalyst and an agent capable of removing acid generated during the process.
