- 1 - ABSTRACT OF DISCLOSURE This invention provides novel 9-chloro-1,5-benzothiazepine derivatives of the formula: (I) Image wherein R1 is hydrogen or lower alkanoyl, or a salt thereof. These derivatives (I) and their salts are useful as an intermediate in the synthesis of novel 5-alkyl-9-chloro- 1,5-benzothiazepine derivatives which show potent hypotensive activity and potent cerebral or coronary vasodilating activity.
