Disclosed is a free-radical addition polymer containing from 55 mole percent to about 95 mole percent of units derived form maleic anhydride and from about 5 mole percent to about less than 40 mole percent of units derived from 1-alkenes having at least 4 carbon atoms wherein the polymer has an average of at least one unit derived from a 1-alkene per polymer chain making up the polymer based on the number average molecular weight of the polymer and thus contains excess units derived from maleic anhydride randomly dispersed throughout the polymer. The polymers are useful in detergents as stabilizers, additives to floor polishes and, especially when esterified with alcohols, as surfactants.
