ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Para-xylene is selectively adsorbed from a C8 aromatic hydrocarbon feed by a crystalline selective adsorbent. The para-xylene is subsequently desorbed by contacting the resulting adsorbent with a 1-(lower alkyl)-4- isopropylbenzene desorbent, wherein the lower alkyl group contains one or two carbon atoms. The desorbent effectively desorbs the para-xylene from the adsorbent, and the para-xylene may be produced as an enriched product.
