ABSTRACT A compound of the formula Image in which R is a radical selected from the group consisting of methyl, ethyl, 1-methylethyl, methoxymethyl, 2-methoxyethyl, 1- methyl-2-methoxyethyl, 2-propenyl, 2-propynyl and 1-methyl-2- propynyl one of R and R1 is hydrogen. These compounds are useful in the preparation of compounds of the formula Image wherein R is methyl, ethyl, 1-methylethyl, methoxymethyl, 2- methoxyethyl, 1-methyl-2-methoxyethyl, 2-propenyl, 2-propynyl or 1-methyl-2-propynyl which are themselves useful as herbicides against a variety of grassy and broadleaf weeds in both pre- emergence and post-emergence applications and show selectivity favourable to cotton in pre-emergence applications.
