Abstract A 1-Epi fortimicin represented by the formula Image wherein: R1 is hydrogen or loweralkyl; R3 is hydrogen or hydroxyl, R3 is selected from the group consisting of hydroxyl, loweralkyl,aminolowerealkyl, diaminolowerealkyl, N-lowerqlkylaminoloweralkyl, N,N-diloweralkylaminolowerealkyl, hydroxyloweralkyl, aminohydroxyloweralkyl, N-loweralkyl- aminohydroxyloweralkyl, N,N-diloweralkylaminohydroxylower- alkyl, acyl, aminoacyl, diaminoacyl, hydroxyacyl, hydroxy- substituted aminoacyl, hydroxy-substututed diaminoacyl, N-lowralkylaminoacyl, N,N-diloweralkylaminoacyl, hydroxy- substituted N-loweralkylaminoacyl or hydrosy-substituted N,N-diloweralkylaminoacyl; R? is hydrogen or methyl; and the pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof.
