Saga-4517 Canada ABSTRACT A process is disclosed for preparing 5-aryl-1- hydrocarbyl-pyrrole-2-acetic acids by reacting a -5-cyano-1- hydrocarbylpyrrole-2-acetic acid with a Grignard compound and then hydrolyzing the resultant reaction product. The 5-cyano-1-hydrocarbylpyrrole-2-acetic acid reactant can be prepared by reacting a 1-hydrocarbyl-2-(2',2',2'-trihalo-1'- hydroxyethyl)pyrrole with a cyanating reagent under basic conditions. The end products are useful for their pharma- ceutical properties. A new type of compound, 5-cyano-1- hydrocarbylpyrrole-2-acetic acid, is provided as an inter- mediate.
