ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Disclosed are novel 1- or 3-monosubstituted 2-oxindole compounds useful as intermediates for the preparation of analgesic and anti-inflammatory 1,3-disubstituted 2-oxindole compounds. The intermediates have the formulae: and Image Image The 1,3-disubstituted 2-oxindole compounds have the formula: Image X is H, halo, alkyl, alkoxy, alkylthio, CF3, alkylsulfinyl, alkylsulfonyl, nitro, phenyl, alkanoyl, benzoyl, thenoyl, alkan- amido, benzamido or N,N-dialkylsulfamoyl; Y is H, halo, alkyl, alkoxy, cycloalkyl, alkylthio or CF3; or X and Y together form methylenedioxy, ethylenedioxy or with the carbon atoms to which they are attached, a cycloalkane or aromatic ring; R1 is alkyl, cycloalkyl, phenyl, phenylalkyl, phenoxyalkyl, heterocyclic ring, etc. and R2 is alkyl, cycloalkyl, phenyl, heterocyclic ring, etc.
