ABSTRACT A steroid having the formula: Image or a 1,2-dehydro derivative thereof, wherein R1 is alkyl, mono-, di- or trifluoroalkyl, R6-?-O-(CH2)?, aryl or alkylthioalkyl, wherein R6 is alkyl or aryl and m is 1,2, 3 or 4; R3 is carbonyl or .beta.-hydroxymethylene: R4 is hydrogen or halogen; R5 is hydrogen, methyl or fluorine; and R7, R8 and R9 are each independently hydrogen or alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms: which is useful as an intermediate in the preparation of related steroids having the formula: Image and the 1,2-dehydro derivatives thereof, which are themselves useful as therapeutic agents because of their anti-inflammatory activity.
