ABSTRACT 2-(2-Alkoxyethyl)-2'-hydroxy-6,7-benzomorphanes of general formula Image I [wherein R1 is methyl, ethyl or propyl; R2 is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl; and R is a group of formula Image Image or Image (wherein R4 is hydrogen or methyl; R5 is methyl, ethyl or propyl; and n in 1 or 2)] and pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts thereof. The compounds, which may be in the form of racemates or racemic mixtures and optically active compounds, exhibit an analgesic activity and may therefore be useful for the control of pain. A process for the preparation of the com- pounds and their use in pharmaceutical compositions are described and exemplified.
