ABSTRACT A process for the preparation of a pyrimidine of the formula Image I wherein A is aryl which comprises reacting an aromatic benzene derivative with an acrylo- nitrile selected from the group consisting of a compound of the formula Image V and a compound of the formula Image VI wherein R4 is, independently, lower alkyl whereby the corresponding enol ether or a mixture thereof with its corresponding acetal is obtained, and subsequently, treating said enol ether or said mixture thereof with its corresponding acetal with guanidine.
