Abstract of the Disclosure 2-Acrylamido-2-methylpropanephosphonic acid of the formula Image (I) is prepared by reaction of 2-methylprop-1-ene-1-phosphonic acid or 2-methylprop-2-ene-1-phosphonic acid with acrylonitrile in the presence of an equimolar amount of a strong acid. The compound is suitable as such or in the form of its salts as comonomer for the manufacture of copolymers having improved properties.
