ABSTRACT Novel 2-cyanosteroids of formula I: I Image wherein R1 is hydrogen or methyl; R2, R3 and R4 are the same or different and are hydrogen or methyl, with a double bond at either the 4,5 or 5,6-position; R5 is methyl or the ter- minus of a double bond at C-13 and 14; R6 is hydrogen or methyl; R7 is methyl or C(CH3)R8; R8 is -OCH2CH2O-, -SCH2CH2S- or =N-O-R9; and R9 is hydrogen or alkyl of from ore to six carbon atoms. These compounds are useful for the induction of menses or the termination of pregnancy.
