2-Deoxystreptamine is an aminocyclitol whose structural stability and abundant functionality make it an attractive scaffold for the combinatorial generation of small molecules. The ability to selectively functonalize the various positions of 2-deoxystreptamine with an almost infinite number of different groups ensures that the libraries so generated will be both spatially and functionally diverse. These compounds can then be screened for biological activity to afford lead compounds for pharmaceutical programs. Additionally, biological ligand mimics based on 2-deoxystreptamine can be readily appended, either directly or through a tether, to solid surfaces or incorporated covalently into gels to afford novel materials useful in separation science.

La 2-desoxystreptamine est un aminocyclitol, dont la stabilité de structure et la richesse de fonctions en fait une charpente intéressante permettant de générer de petites molécules au moyen de combinaisons. La possibilité d'attribuer sélectivement une fonction aux différentes positions de la 2-desoxystreptamine au moyen d'un nombre pratiquement infini de différents groupes, fait en sorte que les banques obtenues de cette façon présenteront une diversité à la fois spatiale et fonctionnelle. On peut ensuite cribler ces composés afin de déterminer leur activité biologique, ce qui permet d'obtenir des composés de première importance pour des programmes pharmaceutiques. On peut, de plus, rattacher sans difficultés des agents mimétiques de ligands biologiques à base de la 2-desoxystreptamine, soit directement, soit par l'intermédiaire d'un lien, à des surfaces solides ou les incorporer de façon covalente dans des gels, de manière à obtenir de nouveaux matériaux utiles dans les techniques de séparation.
