Abstract of the disclosure 2-Methacrylamido-2-methylpropanephosphonic acid of the formula I Image I is prepared by reaction of 2-methylprop-1-ene-1-phosphonic acid or 2-methylprop-2-ene-1-phosphonic acid the methacrylonitrile in the presence of an equimolar amount of a strong acid. The compound is suitable as such or in the form of its salts as comonomer for the manufacture of copolymers, which are used inter alia as dye- ing auxiliaries and as scale inhibitors.
