ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention relates to novel derivatives of 2-phenyl-3-aroylbenzothiophenes and 2-phenyl-3-aroyl- benzcthiophene-]-oxides which are useful as antifertility agents. The compounds of this invention have the qeneral formula Image I in which X is -S- or Image ; R is hydrogen, hydroxyl, or C1-C5 alkoxy; R1 is hydrogen, hydroxyl, C1-C5 alkoxy, C1-C5 acyloxy, C1-C5 alkoxycarbonyloxy, benzoyloxy, adamantoyloxy, chloro, bromo, or Image ; and R2 is hydrogen, hydroxyl, C1-C5 alkoxy, or Image , in any of the above of which R3 and R4 independently are C1-C4 alkyl, or R3 and R4 taken together with the nitrogen to which they are bonded consti- tuce a heterocyclic ring selected from the group consisting of pyrrolidino, piperidino, hexamethyleneimino, or morpholino; subject to the limitation that when R2 is hydrogen, R1 is hydrogen, hydroxy, C1-C5 alkoxy, or Image , and at least one of R and R1 is other than hydrogen. Also provided are pharmaceutically acceptable non-toxic acid addition salts of those compounds of formula I as defined above in which any of R1 and R2 represent Image .
