ABSTRACT A 2-phenyl pyridine derivative of the formula Image wherein when Y=R, Z is selected from the group consisting of R, RO, Image , and Image when Y=RO, Z is selected from the group of straight chain pentyl; Image or CN; when Y is Image or Image , Z is selected from the group of R, RO and CN; when Y is CN, Z is RO, Image , or Image -CH2CH2-; wherein R is a straight chain alkyl group of 1 to 12 carbon atoms useful as a liquid crystal compound, more particularly as nematic liquid crystal compounds which can be used as ingredients of liquid crystal compositions utilized as electro-optical display materials.
