Abstract of the Disclosure The invention relates to novel 5-oxo-2-pyrroline-3- carbonitriles of formula Image wherein R1 and R2, which can be the same or different, are unsubstituted or substituted aromatic rings. Alk is a straight chained or branched lower hydrocarbon chain and Z is a hydrogen atom, with the proviso that when Alk is straight chained Z can also be a group of formula Image in which R3 and R4 are the same or different and are hydrogen atoms or lower alkyl groups or R3 and R4, together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached, form a ring which optionally contains further heteroatoms. The novel compounds and their pharmacologically acceptable salts can be used in the therapy of inflammation without gastrointestinal side effects.
