Abstract New compounds exhibiting antidepressant activity, have the following formula Image wherein R1 and R2 are independently selected from hydrogen, halogen, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, lower alkylthio, tri- fluoromethyl, nitro, amino and cyano; z is selected from Image , Image , Image , and Image wherein the dashed line indicates the optional presence of a double bond; R3 is selected from phenyl, phenyl-lower alkyl, substituted phenyl and substituted phenyl-lower alkyl wherein said substituent is one or two members selected from lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, lower alkylthio, halogen, amino, nitro and trifluoromethyl provided that only one phenyl substituent is selected from amino, nitro, trifluoromethyl and lower alkylthio; R4 is selected from R3 and a heterocyclic ring selected from pyridine, diazine, triazine and substituted pyridinyl, diazine or triazine wherein said heterocyclic ring is attached to the piperazine by way of an available carbon atom and said substituent is a lower alkyl, lower alkoxy or halogen group attached to one or two available carbon atoms of said heterocyclic ring; and A is a straight or branched chain alkylene of 2 to 8 carbons.
