Abstract 3,6-Diamino-3,4-dihydro-2-pyridones of the formula Image (I) wherein R1 is straight or branched chain alkyl or alkenyl or said alkyl or alkenyl interrupted by 1 or 2 oxygen aroms; R2 is straight or branched chain alkyl; alkenyl; alkynyl; cycloalkyl; cycloalkenyl; cycloalkynyl, aryl unsub- stituted or substituted by 1 to 3 of the same or dif- ferent substituents selected from the gruop consist- ing of alkyl, alkoxy, halogen, nitro, cyano, tri- fluoromethyl, carbalkoxy and SOn-alkyl wherein n is 0 to 2; naphthyl; and R3 is straight or branched chain alkyl; or aryl unsub- stituted or substituted by alkyl, alkoxy, nitro, tri- fluoromethyl or halo; are produced by reacting a 4-ylidene-1,3-oxazolin-5-one of the formula Image (II), wherein R2 and R3 are as above defined, with an amidinoacetic acid ester of the formula Image (III) or a salt thereof, wherein R1 is as above defined, in the presence of an inert inorganic solvent and either in the presence of or in the absence of a catalytic amount of an alkali alcohol at a temperature of from about 20° C to about 200° C. The 3,6-diamino-3,4-dihydro-2-pyridones are particularly useful for their coronary-vessel-dilating effect and antihypertensive effect.
