ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention as disclosed provides compounds of the formula: Image [1] wherein R1 is a hydrogen atom or a (C2-C3) alkanoyl group, R2 is a hydrogen atom or a (C2-C4) alkanoyl group, at least one of R1 and R2 being a hydrogen atom, at least one of R' and R" is an R3 group and the other is an R4 group, where R3 is a (C2-C6) alkanoyl group; and pharmaceutically acceptable salts. These compounds are macrolide antibiotics having enhanced antibacterial activity as compared with known antibiotics.
