ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE 7-[3.beta.-hydroxy-2.beta.-(3-hydroxy-3-alkyl-1-alkenyl)-5- oxocyclopentane]-1.alpha.-heptanoic acids and their alkyl esters are obtained by the reaction of an alkyl metal compound with a 7-[3.beta.-hydroxy-2.beta.-(3-oxo-1-alkenyl)-5-oxocyclopentane]- 1.alpha.-heptanoic acid wherein the 3.beta.-hydroxy group is preferably protected by an alcohol protecting group. When the indicated reaction is complete, any protecting group is removed and, if the ester is desired, the carboxylic acid is treated with an appropriate esterifying agent such as diazomethane. The prostaglandin derivatives so produced are valuable and useful as pharmacological agents as is evidenced by their anti-fertility activity. -1-
