Phenothiazines of formula (I) where R1 is H or -COOR, where R is selected from the group consisting of branched or unbranched alkyl groups containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and where X is selected from H, branched or unbranched alkyl groups containing from 1 to 4 carbons, and halogen, and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof. Particularly preferred phenothiazines are those wherein X is hydrogen, chloro, bromo or methyl, R1 is COOR, and R is methyl, ethyl or t- butyl.
