ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention relates to a new 3-formyl-4-methyl-2,6- dihydroxypyridine of the formula I Image I its alkali metal and alkaline earth metal salts and their preparation by hydrolysing the 2,6-dihydroxypyridine derivative of the formula II Image II or one of its alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salts in a basic medium with the elimination of chloroform. The compound of formula I above is a valuable intermediate product especially for the production of dyestuffs.
