The invention concerns 3-(hetero)aryloxy(thio) carboxylic acid derivatives of the formula (I) in which the substituents are defined as follows: R1 is hydrogen, a COOH group or a group which can be hydrolysed to give a COOH group; R2 and R3 are halogen, alkyl, haloalkyl, alkoxy, haloalkoxy or alkylthio; X is nitrogen or CR14, R14 being hydrogen or, together with R3, a 3-membered or 4-membered alkylene or a alkenylene chain in which each methylene group can be replaced by oxygen; R4 is optionally substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl, alkenyl or alkinyl, an optionally substituted five-membered or six-membered heteroaromatic ring containing one to three nitrogen atoms and/or a sulphur or oxygen atom, or optionally substituted phenyl or naphthyl; R4 and R5 together form, together with the neighbouring carbon atom, a 3-membered to 8-membered ring which may contain an oxygen or sulphur atom and may also be substituted; R5 is hydrogen or optionally substituted alkyl, alkenyl, alkinyl, cycloalkyl, haloalkyl, alkoxyalkyl, alkylthioalkyl or phenyl; R6 is optionally substituted phenyl or naphthyl or an optionally substituted five-membered or six-membered heteroaromatic ring containng one to three nitrogen atoms and/or a sulphur or oxygen atom; Y is sulphur or oxygen or a single bond; Z is sulphur or oxygen.
