Abstract of the Disclosure 1-Hydroxy-9-keto-3-alkyl-dibenzo[b,d]pyrans or 1,9-dihydroxy-3-alkyl-dibenzo[b,d]pyrans are oxygenated on the penultimate carbon of the alkyl side chain by fermen- tation with the micro-organism Bacillus cereus NRRL B-8172, to form new compounds having the formula Image I wherein X and Y are either both hydrogen or one is hydrogen and the other methyl; wherein, when taken singly, one of the pair R and R1 and one of the pair R2 and R3 is hydrogen and the other is hydroxyl and, when taken together, the pair R and R1 and the pair R2 and R3 form the oxygen of a ketone group; and wherein n is 1, 2, 3 or 4.
