The present invention relates to 4-amino-.DELTA.4,6-steroids of the formula: (see formula I) which are useful as inhibitors of 5.alpha.-reductase, for example for treating a patient afflicted with a dihydrotestosterone - mediated disease or condition or for treating benign prostatic hypertrophy in a patient. The compounds are prepared by the reaction of an appropriate 4,5-epoxy steroid with sodium azide in an inert solvent in the presence of a strong acid such as sulfuric acid at about 100°C.
