ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Disclosed herein are novel (S)- and R-enantiomers of 4-amlno-N-(1-phenylethyl)benzamide, pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, and compositions comprising the above-recited compounds as the active ingredient. Also disclosed is a process for preparing (R)-4-amino-N- (1-phenylethyl)benzamide, (S)-4-amino-N-(1-phenylethyl)- benzamide, or a pharmaceutically-acceptable salt thereof, which comprises a) reducing the corresponding (S)- or (R)-4-nitro-N-(1-phenylethyl) benzamide; or b) resolving (R,S)-4-amino-N-(1-phenylethyl)- benzamide; and c) if desired, salifying the products. These compounds are useful as anticonvulsant agents.
