ABSTRACT: Described are new 4-hydroxy-1,2-benzoisothlazole-3(2H)- one-1,1-dioxides of general formula I Image ,(I) wherein R1 represents a hydrogen atom; or the hydroxy group; and their salts as well as processes for the preparation of these compounds, moreover preparations containing these com- pounds, i.e. tablets or solutions. The compounds of general formula I show very good sweetening properties with a lack of pharmacological and toxic effects. Compositions containing these compounds are artificial swee- teners.
