ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE New 4-hydroxy-2-benzimidazolinone derivatives the fused benzene ring of which is substituted one or more times by a lower alkyl radical or by an alkylene bridge, exhibit improved .beta.-receptor blocking action and are, therefore, out- standingly useful for the treatment or prophylaxis of cardiac and circulatory diseases in which the derivatives are of formula (I):- (I) Image wherein R is a lower alkyl radical; R1 and R2, which can be the same or different, are lower straight-chain or branched- chain alkyl radicals or hydrogen, provided that when one of R1 and R2 is hydrogen the other is lower alkyl, or R1 and R2 together represent a lower alkylene radical; and R3 is a hydrogen atom or an acyl radical; and include the pharmaceutically acceptable, pharmacologically compatible salts.
