ABSTRACT A light-screening agent which contains as essential active ingredient one or more compounds of the general formula Image (I) wherein when n stands for 1, R1 represents hydrogen, alkyl, an alkali metal, ammonium or ammonium substituted with one or more alkyl or hydroxyalkyl groups, R2 represents hydroxymethyl or alkoxymethyl and R3 represents hydrogen or R1 and R2 together represent a methylene group and R3 represents hydrogen, methyl or ethyl; and when n stands for 2, R1 represents an alkaline earth metal, R2 represents hydroxymethyl or alkoxymethyl and R3 represents hydrogen, and/or one ox more acid addition salts thereof, and a compatible cosmetic base.
