23 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE 5,5-dialkyl hydantoins may be utilized directly as starting material promoters in hot basic aqueous scrubbing systems. Operating parameters encountered in continuous hot basic aqueous scrubbing systems will cause such hydantoins to undergo relatively rapid hydrolysis, yielding the corresponding amino acids which in turn act as promoters for alkali or alkaline earth metal salts used in such scrubbing systems.
