Disclosed are 5,6-diaryl-5,6,7,8--tetrahydronaphthalenes and their analogs of the formula: (see formula I) (wherein A is CH2 or NR; B, D and E are each CH or N; Y is a cyclic group, such as phenyl, naphthyl, heterocycle; Z1 is a connecting group, such as OCH2CH2; G is an N-containing group; R is H or alkyl; and e is 0,1 or 2). These compounds are estrogen agonists or antagonists and are useful for treating or preventing obesity, breast cancer, osteoporosis, endometriosis, cardiovascular disease and hypercholesterolemia.
