There are provided novel 5(and/or 6)substituted 2-(2- imidazolin-2-yl) and 2-(2-imidazolidinyl)nicotinic acids, esters and salts, which are useful as herbicidal agents. There are also provided novel substituted pyrrolopyridine acetonitriles, pyrrolopyridine acetamides, imidazopyrrolopyridinediones and carbamoylnicotinic acid esters, that are useful as intermediates for the preparation of the above said herbicidal agents. These compounds are of the formula I and II respectively Image and Image (I) (II) ; whereln R1 is C1-C4 alkyl, R2 is a group such as C1-C4 alkyl or C3-C6 cycloalkyl, A is a group such as COOR3, R3 is a group such as hydrogen or - N - Image , B is a group such as H or COR4 wherein R4 is a group such as C1-C11 alkyl, W is O or S, Y and Z are each a group such as H or methyl with the proviso that at least one of Y and Z is a group such as C2-C6 alkynyl.
