5-ARALKYL SUBSTITUTED 2H-BENZOTRIAZOLES AND STABILIZED COMPOSITIONS ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE 5-Aralkyl substituted 2-hydroxyphenyl-2H-benzotriazoles of the formula I Image (I) wherein R1 and R2 are independently hydrogen, halogen, alkyl of 1 to 18 carbon atoms or a group of formula II Image (II) wherein E1 and E2 are independently hydrogen or alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms and E3 is hydrogen, halogen or alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, with the proviso that at least one of R1 and R2 must be a group of formula II; R3 is hydrogen, hydroxyl, alkyl of 1 to 12 carbon atoms, alkoxy of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, phenyl, phenyl sub- stituted by one, two or three alkyl groups having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, cycloalkyl of 5 to 6 carbon atoms, carboalkoxy of 2 to 9 carbon atoms, chlorine, carboxyethyl or a group of formula II, R4 is hydrogen, alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, alkoxy of 1 to 12 carbon atoms, chlorine or hydroxyl, and R5 is hydrogen, hydroxyl, alkyl of 1 to 12 carbon atoms, chlorine, cycloalkyl of 5 to 6 carbon atoms or a group of formula II, with the proviso that R3, R4 and R5 cannot each be hydrogen at the same time, and that only one of R3, R4 and R5 can be hydroxyl at the same time, are disclosed. These compounds are useful for protecting organic substrates from light-induced detrioration.
